Our Story
The vision for ITNRacineCounty took root in a challenge presented to the new County Mobility Manager as he was being interviewed for the position. "If you can find a way to solve the problem of transportation for the growing number of seniors who cannot drive, then you will have been successful."
Older adults urgently need reliable and affordable transportation.
A month later, in May 2009, at the conclusion of a Wisconsin Department of Transportation training workshop, that Mobility Manager heard Katherine Freund speak about ITNAmerica in a teleconference presented by the National Center on Senior Transportation. The seed was planted.
Further investigation into the scope of the senior transportation issue led to the conviction that something needed to be done, and could be done, to provide seniors in Racine County a safe and convenient, alternative means of getting to the places they wanted to go. Researching various volunteer driver programs around the country led back to the uniqueness of the ITN model for effective, efficient, and economically sustainable service. Affiliation with ITNAmerica was clearly the path to follow.
With the encouragement and support of the Racine County government – after 5 months of further investigation and discussion - an affiliation agreement was signed in December of 2009. We now look forward to making ITNRacineCounty a reality, enriching the life of our seniors and our community.
